What makes a good pilot?

There are some factors that differentiate elite pilots from the rest:

  1. Avoiding disasters matters more than chasing peaks. It is not about “how high can you score” — it’s “how rarely do you score badly.” Elite pilots have catastrophic rounds (<600) only 15% of the time vs 41% for developing pilots.
  2. Max duration rate separates absolute skill. Elite pilots hit the maximum possible flight time in 20% of rounds. This measures raw thermal ability, independent of competition strength.
  3. Elite pilots are generalists, not specialists. Cross-task variance is 30% lower for elite pilots — they don’t have weak tasks. Being world-class means being good at everything.
