Task A1 — Last Flight (10 min)
Last flight; 5 min max in 10 min
About this task
Rule: Last flight counts. 5 min max. Unlimited flights in 10 minutes working time.
The Challenge: The extended 10-minute window gives more time to explore — but also more time to make mistakes. Pilots can afford to launch early and 'sample' conditions, but must commit to their final flight with enough margin. The extra 3 minutes (vs A2) tempts pilots into risky ventures far from the field.
Decision factors:
- 10 minutes gives 5+ minutes of exploration before committing to the final flight
- Higher landing-out rate (9.8%) than A2 — the extra time invites more aggressive risk-taking
- Point of no return is still at 5 minutes into a flight, but you can restart earlier
- More time to read conditions, but also more chances to second-guess
What the data says: Higher difficulty (107.1) than the 7-min version. The wider window actually makes it harder — avg 653 vs 734 for A2. Failure rate is 35% vs 23%. The extra time seems to encourage risky behavior rather than safer flying. Only 153 entries (rarely used).
