Task A2 — Last Flight (7 min)
Last flight; 5 min max in 7 min
About this task
Rule: Last flight counts. 5 min max. Unlimited flights in 7 minutes working time.
The Challenge: The standard version. With only 7 minutes and a 5 min max flight, the margin is razor-thin. If you launch at 2:00 and land at 4:30, you barely have time for one more attempt. The decision point happens at the 2-minute mark — past that, you're committed.
Decision factors:
- Launch timing is everything: early launch means more flight time but uncertain conditions
- 2-minute decision window before you must commit
- Can get 1-2 attempts maximum before the final flight
- Reading conditions early vs waiting for certainty (but running out of time)
What the data says: The classic F3K task. 41% max rate (highest of any task) — pilots either nail it or don't. 23% failure rate creates the signature bimodal distribution. Used in 122+ competitions — the most common 'last flight' format. Low stddev among top pilots shows the launch timing decision is a learnable skill. 2,455 entries.
