Best flight, unlimited attempts

About this task

Rule: Best single flight counts. 10 minutes working time.

The Challenge: Despite unlimited attempts, getting one truly great flight is surprisingly hard when the working time is long and max time isn't capped at a short interval. You need a single flight that dominates your group — but everyone else also has unlimited attempts to match it.

Decision factors:

  • Unlimited attempts should make this easy — but it doesn't
  • Because everyone has unlimited tries, the bar is set by whoever catches the best thermal
  • The 'best of many' mechanic means you're competing against the other pilots' best moments
  • Time management: do you launch continuously or wait for optimal conditions?

What the data says: Surprisingly the 3rd hardest task despite having 'unlimited attempts' and 'best flight counts.' The 38.5% failure rate and only 24% max rate reveal why: when everyone gets unlimited attempts at finding the best thermal, the one who finds it dominates and everyone else looks mediocre by comparison. This is a 'winner takes all' task where relative performance (not absolute) determines scores. The flat distribution (no bimodality) suggests outcomes are determined by who finds the best conditions, not who makes the best decision.
